I received this book from Dennis Macaraeg in exchange for an honest review and I was so excited to receive it (and a signed bookplate!) I don’t usually read suspense/mystery novels but this one was definitely worth it!
Somewhere in the Shallow Sea begins with Danny working on a scientific compound when he hears the news that his best friend has been kidnapped in the Philippines. Danny catches the next flight over in an attempt to pay the ransom but finds himself and his ex-girlfriend in hot water. This was definitely a novel of suspense; it really kept me on my toes. If you are looking for a fast paced and action packed read, then this is it! I really enjoyed the character development within this book, as both Helen and Danny were both believable and relatable form start to finish.
I loved the way that Macaraeg set up the scenery within Somewhere in the Shallow Sea, I could picture the tropical jungle that surrounds the characters for the majority of the book. The writing style was a bit clunky at times, although it is a brilliant debut novel. I did lose my place a few times as the point of view changed unexpectedly but there were no idle parts of the story.
Somewhere in the Shallow Sea is a short novel, so I really can’t say too much without revealing some major spoilers. I would have liked a bit more detail in some areas, but overall I really enjoyed this book (and the cover is gorgeous!)
I definitely recommend this book for anyone looking for an action packed thrilling novel!
Overall I give Dennis Macaraegs Somewhere in the Shallow Sea: A Novel of Suspense 3 out of 5 stars.
